ADS Volunteers at the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island

“Our homes are filled with more than help, they’re filled with hope.”

ADS had the pleasure of volunteering at our local Ronald McDonald House, in New Hyde Park, NY, on February 16th. The team participated in the RMH Meals from the Heart program by cooking dinner for the over 100 residents. ADS decided to host a Taco Night, which turned out to be a crowd favorite!

Prior to cooking, we had the opportunity to take a tour of the house before we began to cook. Our tour guide, Judy, a volunteer at the RMH LI, did an amazing job at not only showing us around the house, but giving us a vast history of the organization itself. The passion that Judy had was astounding. She excitedly told us personal stories of children and their families who have made the RMH LI their home away from home for a couple of weeks to 200 days. It was a great way to start off the afternoon and give everyone an even better idea of what they were volunteering for. Judy left us with the following phrase that, I’m sure, stuck with everyone: “You are not just cooking dinner, you are doing an extraordinary act of kindness that these families will never forget.”

Not only was this a great opportunity to volunteer for a deserving cause, it was also a night where everyone got to work together outside of the office. Our team is definitely looking forward to continuing to volunteer with the Ronald McDonald House LI.

Ronald McDonald Houses are located across 80 countries and serve as a home away from home for sick children and their families. Since opening its doors in 1986, more than 30,000 families have taken residence at the RMH LI. Studies have shown that a child heals better when their family is near by and the RMH does just that. They also take the burden of worrying about expenses, like food and lodging, off of families, allowing them to focus on their children.
